No more CVT for Audi

New-generation Audi A4 will be fitted with an improved seven-speed DSG transmission.

“The multitronic is no longer going to be around. We’re now able to use a stepped transmission and the efficiency there is better than in comparison to a variator”, head of V6 TDI development Ralph Rigger said in his interview to Motoring.

Continuously variable transmission (CVT) will no long be used in the company’s new models. The work on Multitronic CVT, which produced many technical issues and was often subject to legal claims, has been suspended. All-wheel drive Audi A4, A5, A6 and A7 models used to be equipped with a variator.

From now on, only the seven-speed DSG transmission will be used, which will make its debut together with the new-generation Audi A4 (B9) in 2015.
