BMW is working on a flagship i9 sports car, which should mark centenary of the Bavarian brand.

According to preliminary data, the BMW i9 hybrid sports car is due to arrive in 2016. It should become a successor to the iconic M1 and the BMW M GmbH division will take part in its development.

Under the bonnet, it should carry a more power-packed unit: 231-hp 3-cylinder combustion engine and a 131-hp electric motor will give place to something more powerful. Presumably, the i9’s powerplant will be able to accelerate the car to 100 km/h in 4 seconds.

A four-door i9 sports car is in fact an upgraded i8 coupé. Even more carbon fibre and aluminium will be used in its construction.
