Big block in the small car

Again we are speaking about small car with big engine. Whatta Drag mentioned a couple of months ago looks like separate motor and separate body connected with the frame and our today’s hero has kept its body proportions.

Again we are speaking about small car with big engine. Whatta Drag mentioned a couple of months ago looks like separate motor and separate body connected with the frame and our today’s hero has kept its body proportions.

In the end of 20th century mankind got lots of interesting small things: handheld devices, which are more powerful than first PCs; ultra thin TVs and screens; compact household appliances and of course small city cars, which can be parked lengthwise or crosswise and will occupy the same square of parking place. One of such cars is Smart — creature of Mercedes-Benz & Swatch.

Their first and the most popular model Fortwo became a legend when its production was launched. Now every country has Smart owners club and some owners of those funny 4-wheeled cubes are trying to build something special on basis of their city jungle rovers.

Max Cryer from Illinois decided to take his ’09 Smart to the drag strip. Definitely stock city car will pass the quarter in an hour so Max decided to swap the small motor with a big and powerful one. Chevy V8 7.5 Liters Big Block is quite enough but the body needed few modifications: everything was cut off, and side panels, modified to allow drag slicks installation, were attached to a frame with an engine and gearbox. So the motor moved to the front and the driver’s seat was put to the rear.

There is lack of information about this car, but we revealed that the engine has no charger and is equipped with single 4-barrel carburetor, has manual gearbox and Ford 9-inch rear axle, popular in USA. Approximate power is 450 hp, weight with driver around 500 kg. The best result for now is 11.72 seconds with 184 kmh at the finish and Max Cryer is sure that 10-seconds level can be broken after tuning and it seems to be quite easy.
