Tony Schumacher earned his first win in Top Fuel class this season in the fourth NHRA event held in Las Vegas, while in Funny Car and Pro Stock classes victories were scored by female drivers. For the second time in the history of the major league of American drag racing two ladies managed to score victories in two classes at the same NHRA event. It happened for the first time in 2012 in Seattle when Courtney Force and Erica Enders-Stevens won in Funny Car and Pro Stock classes. History repeated in Las Vegas the only difference being that Alexis DeJoria was the best in Funny Car class this time.
Prior to this championship she was able to race up to the final round one time only. But the third full season in NHRA had a really successful beginning for DeJoria. She clinched victory in Phoenix and then did it again in Las Vegas. Moreover, like it happened last time, she outpaced Robert Hight in the final run who was obviously hoping for revenge but was defeated by the young lady again.
However, in spite of this fact, it is Hight who is now leading in the overall standings moving the legendary John Force, who has not shown any good results in Las Vegas, to the second position. On the other hand, second win in the current championship brought DeJoria to the third place of the series standings.
Meanwhile, Erica Enders-Stevens had no equals in the Pro Stock class. Not only did she have her seventh career win by defeating Jason Line in the final round, she also swept the Horsepower Challenge adding $100,000 to her account. To think that her participation in this season of drag racing was under question due to lack of sponsors!
And finally, in the most powerful Top Fuel class, Tony Schumacher was able to put an end to the non-winning series of 15 races. On his way to long-awaited victory the seven-time NHRA champion defeated Troy Buff, Spencer Massey, and Antron Brown. And in the final round Schumacher was faster than the current leader in the overall standings Doug Kalitta.
Kalitta, who made it to the final round for the third time in four races of the current season, was able not only to preserve but also to strengthen his top position in series standings. He is now 73 points ahead of his closest competitor Antron Brown.
However, the main championship battle is yet to unfold. The fifth series event held in Concord this week-end has just come to an end. The dragway there features the world's only four-lane dragstrip. You can watch qualifying and eliminations on Viasat Sport channel.
