BMW will need two years to build the follower of the M coupé but the manufacturer promises to start with mass production of the sports car instead of making a limited edition. The coupé is expected to be fitted with a 3-litre engine also used by the M235i but in its uprated version — it will deliver 380 hp instead of the M235i’s 325 hp. It will have a 0-to-100-km/h time of a bit more than four seconds. The company does not have plans to produce more powerful modifications in order to avoid any competition with the 425-hp BMW M4.
According to preliminarily information, the new coupé will feature rear-wheel drive layout. There will be two M2 versions available — one fitted with six-speed manual gearbox and another one fitted with eight-speed automatic with electronically controlled differential.
BMW M2 will resemble the track modification of the M235i, however, it will feature wider wheel arches, slightly altered bumpers, big rear spoiler and door sill plates. Some of the aerodynamic body elements will be made of carbon fibre. The cabin will have a sportier character not only because of the M letter in the name of the car but thanks to sports seats, wheel and interior trimming.
The engineers do their best to make the new coupé truly distinctive among other cars and they will definitely need time for that. We will find out whether their efforts were successful only in 2016.
