One of the sports at the Winter Olympic Games is bobsleigh. The news about it hit the headlines even before the competitions began when mass media found out that the Jamaican bobsleigh team had lost a bob on their way to Sochi. But we will not be talking about the fun facts of the Olympics. Here we have serious conversations about automobiles. It turned out that the bobs for the teams of Italy and Great Britain were prepared by the engineers from the famous Formula 1 teams Ferrari and McLaren correspondingly.
The British bob went through the melting pot of McLaren Applied Technologies (MAT) — a subdivision of McLaren group. The engineers from this company also helped the skeleton racers and tobogganists by designing sleds and toboggans and performing tests in the wind tunnels.
The same works were completed by the Italian Ferrari. Automobile and racing engineers together with the specialists from the Italian National Olympic Committee created a two-man sled of special design. Simone Bertazzo and Simone Fontana will be defending the honour of the high racing technologies standing in the service of the Olympic sports. The bob went through wind tunnel tests at Maranello. The engineers also measured the drag coefficient of tobogganists and skiers in order to find the ideal position of the sportsmen at high speeds and select the right type of outfit from the point of view of aerodynamics!
US sportsmen were no exception. The American division of BMW, Designworks USA, developed and redesigned the means of transportation of the US bobsledders and skeleton racers.
