Audi considers launching production of an autonomous A8 model.
The driverless Audi RS 7 concept lapped the Hockenheimring during the free practice sessions prior to this season’s DTM finale. The A8 model will also inherit an autonomous driving technology. At the moment, the company is refining the autopilot system, as apart from hitting the racing tracks the car will also travel on public roads.
The company’s officials hope that the Audi A8 would become the world’s first production autonomous car. One of Audi’s representatives told Motoring that the car is going to be utterly safe as “when you have a proper [autonomous] system, it will be always better than human beings. They are not phoning, talking to the neighbour, [getting distracted by] a nice girl, there are so many distractions”.
The new-generation Audi A8 concept will make its debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show. It is expected to enter production late in 2016.
