Audi loves making a fuss over its new models. This time they want the new Audi RS7 Sportback to carry out a demonstration lap around the circuit. Without a driver.
The car will be unveiled on October 19th before the final race of DTM, the German Touring Car Championship. It’s a completely autonomous vehicle, which should post a flying lap at the Hockenheimring race track in Germany. Its length is 4.574 km.
As there will be no Formula 1 driver behind the wheel and the car does not have the abilities of a DTM driver either, it is unlikely to beat the lap record of 1:33.576 min. The target time is 2 minutes at the speed reaching up to 240 km/h.
One should note that this is not the first Audi's attempt at a driverless lap in motorsports. Back in 2010, a self-driving TTS coupé climbed Pikes Peak in 27 minutes. As a comparison, in 1916, Rea Lentz covered the 20-km distance in 20 min 55.6 sec. The current record-holder is Sébastien Loeb, who ran the mountain in 8:13.878.
