Mercedes-Benz are to produce a hydrogen-powered vehicle no sooner than in 2017 and the company is going to price-match it with hybrid models.

The company’s plan was to add hydrogen-powered cars to the Mercedes-Benz’ lineup by 2015, however, more time is needed. Herbert Kohler, vice president of e-drive and future mobility for Daimler, told Automotive News that the premiere would arrive no sooner than in 2017. So, Toyota has taken the lead, as its hydrogen-powered vehicle is due to arrive next year.

Mercedes-Benz explain the delayed launch with the fact that the company has taken a decision to outsource production of spare parts, thus cutting manufacturing costs. They have signed a contract with Ford and Renault-Nissan, which will work on developing a fuel cell powerplant.
