“If he [Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone] doesn't, I'll do it myself. I see it as my duty”, said Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo and called for an urgent meeting. Bernie Ecclestone has just exhaled after Kimi Räikkönen’s huge crash at the British Grand Prix, which, according to F1 boss, should have distracted everyone from problems with sound, when one of the teams lost patience.
Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo threatens to take decisive actions in case Bernie doesn’t get down to work on attracting the audience to Formula 1 races. 66-year-old Montezemolo pulls no punches and talks about things others don’t dare say aloud. He called F1 drivers “taxi drivers” whose major task is not racing but saving tyres and fuel.
Montezemolo has been criticising Ecclestone for quite a long time already. Back in 2012 he said: “I always say to Bernie the one-man show in life is finished”.
It is unclear yet whether Luca di Montezemolo is conceiving a revolution in Formula 1 or just trying to distract everyone’s attention from Ferrari’s poor performance, but the fact remains: interest towards Formula 1 races is actually melting away. Formula 1 cannot be kept afloat for long with the help of “taxi drivers” only, so we should be expecting more scandals.
