British engineers develop a new family of powerplants dubbed Ingenium. They are claimed to be more powerful, fuel-efficient and lighter. The new engines have undergone 72,000 hours of dyno tests and more than 3.2 million kilometres of real-world testing. But that’s not all, there are still more tests ahead.
As reported by the company’s representatives, Ingenium engines will feature modular design. The Brits used a trick — flexibility of the entire construction, a big number of common components and a common 500-cc cylinder displacement allow streamlining new engine versions and creating a wide range of hybrid powerplants. The engines will get direct injection system, variable valve timing and stop-start, and turbochargers. What concerns their weight, the new engines are expected to be 80 kg lighter.
The Ingenium engine family will debut in Jaguar XE sedan, which will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show.
