AMG decided to use new technology for tuned cars. But not everyone meets new initiative to produce new engines with electric chargers with positive mood.
Johan Martin Schmidt, head of AMG motor department decided to inherit Formula 1 technologies and to add electric compressor. In difference with turbo, which uses exhaust flow, the new compressor uses electricity. The idea is to avoid turbo lag and to support necessary turbine speed. We are not going deep into details, Schmidt said that AMG will not cop-paste new technologies from motorsports, but “we can use similar ideas for road cars and get definitely that ideas will bring us extra benefit”.
Similar idea is being developed in Audi — the prototype of new RS5 coupe with 6-cylindered diesel engine is equipped with turbo an electric compressor as well. Such cars will be launched in 2015–2016. AMG is not announcing terms.
Well, this solution did not make happy fast car fans and tuning shops are not very interested in electric chargers but perhaps AMG will manage to attract customers’ attention.
