A slap in the face of Leon Cupra dealt by Megane on the track at Nürburgring has not been forgotten. Seat could not put up with losing the title of the fastest front-wheel drive car and that is why it is coming up with something in return — an extreme version of the Leon Cupra hot-hatch.
As a reminder, track-focused Megane RS 275 Trophy-R hatchback lapped “The Green Hell” in 7 minutes 54.3 seconds, which is 4.1 seconds faster than Seat Leon Cupra. Both respect and title went off to Renault.
“Yes, Renault have the record, but it’s a very different type of car to ours. If we removed parts from Leon Cupra, it’s only four seconds, I’m confident we could beat it,” Leon Cupra chassis development manager Sven Schawe told AutoExpress.
The new Leon Cupra will become 100 kg lighter due to removing rear seats and noise insulation equipment. All details are under wraps so far but, most probably, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Cupra will get a power increase from 280 to 300 hp. Let’s see what turns out of it. It doesn’t matter how exactly the two are going to pit against each other as long as they continue producing cars.
