Yet another loud statement was made by McLaren — they announced the launch of a track-only 1000-hp version of the P1 GTR hybrid supercar. The bar has been raised up to the limit as the company decided to build “the best drivers' car in the world on the track”.
Its difference from a street-legal version lies not only in the GTR tag. It will also feature a wider track, improved aerodynamic characteristics, increased downforce, boosted hybrid powerplant (power increase of 84 hp), slick tyres, and, of course, a more aggressive exterior.
There is no word regarding the number of cars in this edition yet but, most probably, it will be limited to a couple of dozens of supercars. The company used a well-worn move to sell the premiere — only the owners of the street-legal P1 cars will be able to purchase it. The price of the car is £1.98 million. These cars can be stored at the manufacturer’s facility, as they do it with the track-only Ferrari supercars. In case the owner wants to have a ride on the racing track, he or she just makes a call and the car is delivered straight to the circuit. In addition to that, the future owners of the P1 GTR get a lucky ticket for participation in six dedicated international drive events, a personal instructor, and access to racing simulators.
A few words about the GTR tag. It has already been used for the racing modification of the McLaren F1 supercar in the 24 hours of Le Mans race in 1995. That time McLaren became the winner in the overall standings. So, first you need to take your chance and then victories will follow. Although, having a car like that is already a victory.
