Mitsubishi has unveiled the new, third version, of the all-electric race car MiEV Evolution which is due to debut at the hillclimbing race to the summit of Pikes Peak. The car has become lighter, more manoeuvrable, and 60-hp more powerful.
It is an updated last-year’s version of the MiEV Evolution II. The powerplant has not been subject to any drastic changes and the race car is still powered by four electric motors, one per wheel. However, the total output of the powerplant has increased and now it reaches 603 hp.
The engineers have done a big job on upgrading suspension system and rigidity of the body, thus improving steering characteristics. Moreover, they managed to reduce the car’s weight. There are now more carbon fibre elements, the wheels have become larger, and there is a redesigned rear spoiler. Apart from that, the all-wheel drive system S-AWC has been modified providing the car with more grip.
Two race cars were entered for the competition with Hiroshi Masuoka and Greg Tracy behind their wheels. Last year they took second and third places in their classes consequently.
The international hillclimbing race to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA, was first run in 1916. The track measures 19.99 km and the goal of the participants is to cover the entire distance in minimum time. All vehicles are divided into classes according to the type of body, type and horsepower of the powerplant, and several other key features.
The overall record in Pikes Peak hillclimbing competition is held by the French driver Sébastien Loeb, who managed to fly the entire distance in 8 minutes 13.878 seconds driving a custom made 875-hp Peugeot T16 Pikes Peak.
