Homebuilt car — this statement draws a picture of a car which always need improvements and will never be finished but in Scandinavia such project can be done in very serious way. The best example is Henrik Mattson’s V70. He ensures his car was built in its own garage but the quality and attention to details are amazing. Henrik works as a mechanic for one of Volvo dealers so it’s easy to understand why V70 was chosen for the project.
It is necessary to say that exterior remained almost in stock condition — 19” BBS wheels and few decals — these are all amendments done to the body of the car. Definitely we can see that brakes are modified as well but we will speak about them later.
What about interior? Everything was cut off. Even the roof and the floor and all “useless” metal was deleted. Instead of this Henrik prepared a strong frame with new suspension and engine mounts. The floor, the roof and the front firewall are made of carbon. Henrik’s brother helped with carbon details and with spraying the car in the white color. The result is awesome — usual Swedish wagon was transformed into a race car!
Attention to details makes us think that Henrik is not usual perfectionist but also a client of a psychiatrist. Quality of welding, rear wheel arches, fuel system pipes, exhaust pipe in the rear left door — everything looks like a masterpiece and you can even forget about technical side of this car.
Under the hood you see 5-cylindered Volvo engine placed longitudinally and moved closer to the cabin, as the car is RWD now. The block is built with forged pistons, everything was balanced and covered with modified head with 270 degrees camshafts with a 10.5 mm valves lift. These 5 cylinders are charged with Precision SC61 Turbo with 50mm wastegate. It’s obvious that Henrik made the intake and exhaust himself and Nuke Performance parts make only necessary highlights to the fuel system which can bring a liter of fuel in a minute through every injector. In few photos you can see purple fixings to hold various pipings in order and this is not Wiggings clamp but a special fixing from aerospace industry. Henrik’s friend works for Swedish air force and he managed to get that details which cost hundreds of dollars.
What about the suspension? It is made of outstandingly machined handmade details with pillow ball links and every axle has its own adjustable swaybar.
Transmission was taken from BMW M3 E36 and with modified clutch it brings 450hp to the rear axle from Corvette C4 through custom made propshaft. Rear axle was shortened for 4 cm to fit the dimensions of V70.
The brakes — for sure they are modified — there are AMG 8-pot calipers in the front and 4-pot calipers in the rear. Painting on calipers is similar to the painting on engine covers. Already mentioned 19” BBS are wrapped into Yokohama Neova AD08 235\35 in the front and 295\30 in the rear.
The interior is Swedish-like minimalistic — racing seats are fitted directly to a frame section on the floor and in the middle there is a tall transmission tunnel with a gear lever. V70 dashboard is flocked to avoid reflections and a number of AutoMeter instruments is put into carbon plates. Door carts are also made of carbon with magnificent window levers. Instead of rear seat between the rollcage tubes there is a box for helmet and racing suit.
Well, when you look to this masterpiece it is quite difficult to say that it is a homebuilt car as it is done with quality of an auto manufacturer team.
