At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show Porsche is going to unveil its “affordable” roadster, the one they started talking about three years ago.

Back then Porsche have studied the project of the affordable model, which was supposed to reside in a pre-Boxster niche in Porsche’s lineup, and turned it down. President and CEO of the famous German supercar manufacturer Matthias Müller gave the following comment then: “Possibly we need to wait until the next generation of customers before the idea of a small roadster will work for Porsche”.

In other words, they were afraid that this “low-budget” variant might taint the company’s image. But now, having laid aside all the prejudices, they came back to this idea. According to AutoBild, the model is code-named Porsche 718 and will become a successor to the 550 Spyder, which was rolling off the production lines in the 1950s. The premiere will be built on a modified Boxster platform, but it will be lighter as they plan to use aluminium in its construction and downsize the model.

Most probably, the new roadster will have a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder 286-hp turbocharged or a 2.5-litre 360-hp engine under its bonnet. The powertrain will be fitted with either manual or dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission.

What concerns the budget, the price of the car will start at around €39,000.
