A contract has been agreed with Bernie Ecclestone to hold Formula 1 Grand Prix in Azerbaijan. It was reported by the country’s Minister of youth and sports Azad Ragimov. This event has not come as a surprise as the F1 boss does not usually use words lightly and he had already given a few hints about Baku earlier.
Azad Ragimov did not provide details on the contract, he just stated the facts: “We have signed the deal with Bernie Ecclestone and will announce it officially with an event in Baku shortly”.
Gran Prix will be held in 2016 at the city track of Baku which goes around the National Flag Square and the Crystal Hall concert centre. The length of one lap is 4.4 km. However, it will not be the first time when this circuit is going to host a racing event — the track configuration has already been explored by the pilots of the GT3 touring race held as part of the City Challenge Baku event.
The only thing is that Bernie has not made an official statement yet, but most probably he just doesn’t have enough time. Apart from dealing with Formula 1 problems, he is also involved in a lawsuit and faces charges of bribery.
