After the epic recall performed by General Motors, the Japanese manufacturer also decided to “distinguish” itself. The recall initially referred to 42,000 Mazda 6 cars produced from 2010 through 2012 mostly in the United States. And the reason for that are... the spiders. Yellow Sac spiders (Cheiracanthium Punctorium) were found in the fuel and ventilation systems in the cars fitted with 2.5-litre engines.
According to the experts, it is true that the smell of petrol can be attractive for some insect species — it’s like “Chanel No. 5” for them. There were other insect “invasions” in the history of car manufacturing including ants and other small bugs. However, some of the automobile gurus assume that the spiders are merely an occasion while the real cause of the recall has not been disclosed. But in this case the manufacturer might face a lot of lawsuits and become liable to sanctions issued by regulatory authorities. Why take a risk like that?
However, spiders were not the only issue. The reason of yet another recall of Mazda vehicles in the Japanese market are the problems with battery charging system when slowing down or braking. As reported by auto.vesti.ru, the Japanese carmaker informs that the mentioned technical troubles might lead to engine stall. No accidents or casualties have been reported due to the problem.
All in all, the recall programme includes 27,600 Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 in Japan (manufactured between October 2012 and January 2014). According to Reuters, 38,000 cars in Europe and 6,500 cars in North America will have to visit maintenance centres. The Russian owners of Mazda should not be concerned about the problem as no hybrids were supplied to our country. Not supplied officially, of course.
