Within the next four years Alfa Romeo will have seven new vehicles featuring not only a sedan and a wagon, but also a roadster and a crossover. According to AutoBild magazine, all cars — except for the mid-engined roadster 4C Spider — will be based on the new rear-wheel drive Giorgio platform.
This year the concept of the 4C Spider has already been revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. It features a 1.75-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine able to deliver 236 hp and a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. 4C Spider sprints to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and its top speed is 250 km/h. It is expected to start rolling off the production line next year.
Further plans include a D-segment Giulia which will come in sedan and wagon forms by the year 2017. It is entrusted to be the replacement for the Alfa Romeo 159 which is not an easy task. A bit “stouter” Alfetta, also in sedan and wagon forms, is scheduled to arrive a year later. It might be based on the platform of one of Maserati models. As reported by the Za rulem magazine, it will be a rival for the BMW 5-Series.
The first crossover Alfa Romeo Giulietta Cross is going to be the next one to hit the market. There is no word about its platform yet. One of the ideas, it might be borrowed from some of Jeep models.
Unfortunately, the fate of the sports car, which is going to be based on the Mazda MX-5 platform, is still unknown. According to some reports, there were questions with the roadster’s exterior and that is why its premier was postponed. However, it will be produced under the Fiat or Abarth brands.
There are lots and lots of plans and really a lot of debuts scheduled. We just need to monitor the dates of Italian premieres with female names and I wish we don’t get confused with them — Giulia, Giulietta, Alfetta...
