With an increasing frequency one can see the photos of the first Russian Formula 1 pilot dressed in a suit with the name of the Mercedes-Benz DTM team on it. As it usually happens, there are a lot of rumours and snatches stirred up by mass media before the contract had been signed. While the actual participants of the events give rather weasel answers. But as they say, there is no smoke without fire. Here is what was noted by the Mercedes motorsport chief Toto Wolff.
«Vitaly has been on the podium in Formula one. What else do you need to say? The test in Portugal was successful, and now we are trying to bring everything together to sign a contract. We are considering the option (of signing Petrov) very seriously. If you want me to be specific, I would say the chances are about 60 per cent,» said Toto Wolff in his interview to WCF.
Quite recently the former F1 Renault and Caterham driver made his test debut behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz AMG C-Coupé at the Portimão race track in Portugal.
After the end of their career in Formula 1, which happens for one reason or another, a lot of racing drivers, including the most notable ones, continue performing in this touring series. Including but not limited to Ralf Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen. Former Force India pilot Paul Di Resta has already signed the contract for 2014.
