Not surprisingly, there is more news from Detroit. This time it concerns the sphere of ecological vehicles. About a year ago the Bavarian BMW group announced its plans about the start of serial production of their electric i3 series causing rumours that Tesla, one of the pioneers in electric car manufacturing, was going to release its competitor. But this information was confirmed only during the press conference held now at the Detroit Auto Show by Tesla Vice President Jerome Guillen.
The new vehicle will be added to the company’s model range consisting of Model S and Model X. The car’s estimated price will be about $40,000 according to the information received from the company. In comparison with Model S, which costs $70,000, one might say it’s an affordable car. But this price is for the American market. It might cost much more in Europe.
Model S — a sedan powered by electricity — can now be considered the only full-featured product released by Tesla Motors. Model X crossover has not been put on production line so far. However, Tesla is planning on creating a new model range which could adequately compete with the BMW 3 series. According to Guillen, the whole process from designing the car and up to introducing it on the market will take 3 years.
At the same time, the engineers from California are not changing plans regarding Model X crossover. It is scheduled that the first electric crossovers will be delivered to their customers this year. An interesting fact is that right now the orders for Tesla Motors crossover are taken for 2015 only — the electric all-wheel drive car became incredibly popular even before the launch of its production.
There were rumours that Tesla was also going to create an electric pickup. You bet! An American car manufacturing company does not produce the most popular vehicle! But right now the idea had been put aside till things go better.
