On November 1, the race-spec version of the Toyota Fuel Cell Vehicle hydrogen sedan will take part in test sessions held on the track of Shinshiro-shi, Japan. The driver will have to cover the distance of more than 200 km.
The road-legal version is due to launch in Japan in April 2015 and reach the European and U.S. markets by summer. The price of the entry-level model will start at 8 million yen (around 2,700,000 RUB). The company further intends to reduce the price by 50 percent but no sooner than in 2020.
What we know is that the standard hydrogen-powered FCV is fitted with a unit, which generates electricity through the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. This energy is used to charge the batteries coupled to a 136-hp electric motor. The FCV can jump to 100 km/h in 10 seconds.
At the moment, one of the major problems is a small number of hydrogen fuelling stations, as a full “tank” of hydrogen can carry Toyota's FCV for 500 km.
