It promised it would, and it came back

Mercedes-Benz has promised and announced several times to reveal the revived and reconsidered Maybach. It will keep its promise at September’s Los Angeles Motor Show. This time, an entire lineup will carry the renowned name.

That makes sense. According to the company’s new approach, Maybach will occupy the segment of luxury limousines similar to AMG, which focuses on sports cars.

The marque’s firstling is the model based on the long-wheelbase version of the last-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Its name is Mercedes-Benz S600 Maybach. The car boasts of a rather impressive size: wheelbase — 3.7 m, length — 5.6 m. Even though the new Maybach is 30 cm longer than the S600 Long, it will not be able to supersede the extra-long Pulman (6.4 m) out of Mercedes’ model range and will occupy a different niche.

Maybach has stopped its production lines twice. The first time it happened during the World War II. By that time the company, which was created in 1907 to produce aircraft engines, had been restructured to become a manufacturer of expensive limousines. Daimler restarted Maybach production in the early-2000s. However, in 2012 production stopped due to poor sales volumes. It has been just a two-year break this time.

So, what will the buyer of the new Maybach get? Its interior will offer its luxury to 4 or 6 passengers. It carries a 6.0-litre 12-cylinder engine delivering 530 hp. There is an uprated version that produces 630 hp.

Maybach will extend its model range with the help of special editions of other models. For the moment, there is information about three “donors”: an S-Class, an S-Class convertible, and a GL-based SUV.
