Mercedes-Benz consider gesture-recognition tech

Things are humming at the Mercedes-Benz laboratory. Now its experts work on developing a new technology that allows controlling the car with the help of gestures.

“Yes, we are working on gesture controls for some functions, but of course, using hand signals is not right for everything. For example, if you are inputting a destination to the navigation, this is easier with voice recognition or a menu than gestures. But it is something we are continuing to work on, and you will see it soon”, said Mercedes-Benz chief interior designer.

Sure enough, all details are kept under wraps so far, as the premiere of the new-generation S-Class, which will be the first to feature this system, is scheduled for 2018.

The production vehicle should boast of new one-piece seats borrowed from the Concept S-Class Coupé revealed at last year’s Frankfurt Auto Show. The engineers decided that this construction would reduce the weight of the seat but it will still feature all functions like adjustment, heating, and massage. The company is also developing a new multimedia system and an interactive control panel.
