General Motors infringes drivers’ privacy

General Motors unveiled a prototype Android app called DiDi Plate. It helps to find data about the car’s owner after scanning his driver's license plate.

According to Computerworld, DiDi Plate was revealed at the conference in Detroit. John Du, director of GM China's Science Lab, said that the major hurdle is the privacy law. This app allows you to take a photo of a license plate with the help of your smartphone and get access to information about the car’s owner.

In a video demonstrated by the company, a man asks a woman for a date with the help of this app. In another video, a woman’s car is blocked in a parking lot, so she uses DiDi to find contacts of the “violator” and messages him to move the vehicle away. Miracles!

Another problem with the app is that General Motors doesn’t want it to be downloaded via Android store. The company plans to use it as an optional app embedded in their cars' infotainment systems.

As you can see, there are quite a lot of spokes in the wheels so far, though the idea seems to be interesting. However, quite possible is that not only right-minded and law-abiding people would be using this app…
