Hybrid supercar BMW i8 has become a real gem in the model range of the Bavarian manufacturer. It features a totally new design, new technologies, environmental friendliness, and fuel efficiency. In addition, it’s not just a regular car but a real supercar. i8’s mass production started in April at the company’s plant in Leipzig. Finally, the first eight vehicles were handed to their owners as part of an official ceremony held in Munich with the participation of the company’s chiefs. Price of the sports coupé starts at €126,000.
BMW i8 uses a carbon fibre body. Its exterior panels are made of composite materials. The supercar has an all-wheel drive layout. Rear wheels are powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine delivering 231 hp, while the front axle is powered by an electric motor producing 131 hp.
A hybrid powerplant provides i8 with the performance of a supercar. It sprints to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds with the consumption rate of 2.1L per 100 km, according to the European measurement standard. Obviously, the actual consumption rate will be higher; however, it should not exceed 5L per 100 km in urban cycle. With just the electric power alone, the sports car can run for 37 km.
