The first SUV in the company’s history is to appear in Rolls-Royce lineup by 2017. The British engineers have already started working on the vehicle’s design.

According to Autocar, Giles Taylor, the marque’s design chief, noted that they had a lot of work to do, as the car’s exterior is not going to be similar to that of a crossover. It should look like a sport wagon, more shooting brake than SUV.

The traditional Rolls-Royce DNA will be preserved in the car’s interior, which is going to follow the classic style of the company’s passenger cars. The premiere might use the platform of the BMW 9-Series sedan or BMW X7 which are also being developed right now. There is no word regarding technical specs yet, but the engineers have to consider everything thoroughly as Bentley is going to producing the major rival of the future SUV in 2016.

The premiere is catered mainly at the Chinese market. The price of the standard Rolls-Royce SUV will start at $337,000.
