General Motors not just recalls some of its vehicles, but also fires employees. This time Jim Federico, one of GM’s top engineers, resigned voluntarily. He had led an internal analysis of the automaker’s ignition switch defect, which was eventually followed by a big vehicle recall.
Jim has retired after 36 years with General Motors where he was responsible for the company's global small-car development. According to Automotive News, it was not the first resignation. Quite recently, John Calabrese, G.M.«s head of global engineering, and Selim Bingol, senior vice president of public policy and communications, have also left the company. Sure enough, according to the official version, their resignations are not related to the company’s recall of 2.6 million cars. Apparently, if they had managed to solve the problems with ignition switch defects 10 years ago, as soon as they had learned about the problem, they wouldn’t have to part with employees now.
However, the most important issue here is the safety of drivers, so any measures taken by the company should change the situation. And hopefully it will be a change for the better.
