The second race of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 was held at the Spanish racetrack MotorLand Aragón. After having a contact with the one of the competitors’ cars the Russian pilot Egor Orudzhev had to go to boxes and finished in the end of the peloton as a result. The series rookie Matevos Isaakyan was 15th to finish the race.
Orudzhev was eighth in qualifying being just 0.2 seconds behind the leader.
“The car was set up well”, assumes Egor Orudzhev, “I do admit I made a mistake in one of the turns of the last lap of qualifying and it had definitely affected the final result”.
After the start of the race Egor managed to win back a few positions and set best lap time. Fighting for the fifth place, the Russian driver overtook the Thai driver Alex Albon. But in the next turn Albon made contact with Orudzhev damaging the car. It made the Russian driver go to boxes and eventually be the last to cross the finish line.
Based on the results of qualifying, Matevos Isaakyan had 20th starting position. Nevertheless, the driver managed to win back five positions and finished 15th.
“All in all, the first round of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 was rather successful for us”, says the chief of the junior division of the SMP Racing team, Russia’s merited coach in motor sport Petr Aleshin. “The level of training of Orudzhev does allow him to fight for the highest positions in the current championship. Yesterday he climbed the podium but today he ran out of luck. Noteworthy is the fact that he demonstrated best lap times in both races. What concerns Matevos Isaakyan, his debut fell within the Eurocup. And that is not an easy beginning. However, Matevos was not at a loss and revealed his potential by getting into top ten in his first qualifying passing a lot of experienced pilots”.
The next round of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 will be held on May 31, 2014 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
