Dodge does not want Challenger to be too powerful

The horsepower of the new Dodge Challenger has not been revealed yet but it is obviously going to be fitted with the new gearboxes and engines. While the photographers are chasing the test version of the sports car on the roads, the SRT company is busy with a more global question — how much power should be delivered by the new engines. There are rumours that the trim with low-powered engines would feature not only the traditional six-speed gearbox, but the eight-speed automatic as well.

But let’s get back to the most interesting part. According to the Allpar website, the engine lineup is not going to go through any serious changes. The standard 3.6-litre V6 will most probably produce around 300 hp. There are also modifications with two naturally-aspirated engines — 5.7-litre and 6.4-litre V8s delivering 375 and 470 hp correspondingly, but they are unlikely to be more powerful.

The changes might affect the model fitted with the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 motor. According to SRT CEO Ralph Gilles, the engine could deliver 650–700 hp without any problems. But in this case it would be more powerful than the 649-hp Dodge Viper. At the moment, the latter is considered to be the company’s flagship and they don’t want it to be less powerful.

Either the Viper will be uprated, or the Challenger will be deprived of some power. It is still unknown which decision the company is going to make.
