Not so long ago Mazda was expected to reveal at the New York Auto Show the new MX-5 chassis built to celebrate its 25th anniversary. However, according to Autoweek, Mazda is ready to surprise everyone. Celebrating birthday is a global event and that is why it was decided to demonstrate the entire car instead of just chassis.
The MX-5 roadster will be based on the same platform as the future sports car Alfa Romeo Spider. These cars will feature up to 40% of common parts though their characters will still be different.
Mazda MX-5 will be fitted with a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol SKYACTIV engine — the one which was recently launched in the Mazda 3 — though the manufacturer would barely refrain from building a 2-litre motor as well. MX-5 will have a rear-wheel drive layout and will weigh around 1 tonne. Whether the company is going to reveal the all-new MX-5 or just its chassis it still a pleasant mystery and we have to wait for less than a month to find out how it’s solved.
