Porsche reduces CO2 emissions and replaces the engines

Porsche is going to fit the new Boxster and Cayman-4 with 4-cylinder engines producing 400 hp. It was reported by Porsche CEO Matthias Müller. According to “Auto Motor und Sport”, Boxster and Cayman will be equipped with the same engines as those used in the Porsche 919 Hybrid prototypes which are going to take part in the World Endurance Championship.

The difference will be quite obvious as right now both Boxster and Cayman are fitted with six-cylinder 3.4-litre engines producing 325 and 315 hp consequently. But there is one more modification with the GTS index which is 15 hp more powerful.

Unlike them, the 919 Hybrid model is equipped with a 2.0-litre 16-valve turbocharged V4 with direct injection. But it concerns the racing variant while the engine in the road-going modification will feature boxer layout. As reported by motor.ru, the powerplant will also include a front axle-mounted electric motor, a lithium-ion battery pack and two energy recovery systems — KERS and ERS.

What concerns the company’s plans to reduce CO2 emissions in everyday life, Matthias Müller has not yet reported on the date when the 400-hp Boxster and Cayman are going to arrive. Meanwhile, we can admire the 919 Hybrid in the WEC as the former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber is going to be one of Porsche’s pilots. First race will be held on April 18–20, 2014, at the Silverstone Circuit (UK).
