Beta testing of “Avtokod” (AutoCode) service dealing with history reports on used cars took off in Moscow. The project is supported by the city’s IT department. The web portal provides the information about the number of previous owners of the vehicle, how long the car has been in service, reports on accidents and their consequences. You need to enter the vehicle identification number (VIN), chassis number, the registration certificate of the vehicle or the current number plate.
Right now the database comprises the information on the cars registered on the territory of Moscow. So far you can obtain this information for free. Later on it will also be possible to find out whether the car is pledged to the bank or has been amerced by the court.
CarFax and AutoCheck, similar systems which provide car history reports on the territory of the USA and Canada, also include the vehicle's service history and other scheduled and unscheduled repairs. These services are fee-based; however, the fee is rather moderate.
