Nordschleife has always been one of the most complicated and longest race tracks but now it has also turned into one of the most powerful marketing tools. Nowadays, lap time shown there is one of choice criteria together with top speed and 100 km/h acceleration time. And of course, all supercar manufacturers started paying a lot of attention to this value. Almost each debut of a new supercar is accompanied by an impressive Nürburgring lap time. McLaren P1 hypercar is not an exception and its creators had set themselves an ambitious task — to lap Nordschleife under 7 minutes on a road car.
Let us remind that only a few street-legal cars were able to lap it in less than 7 minutes. One of them was Porsche 918 which managed to lap Nordschleife at 6 minutes 57 seconds, with only Radical models being faster. However, McLaren had thoroughly prepared its hypercar for the new record — its 3.8-litre V8 twin-turbocharged petrol engine combined with electric motor produces more than 900 hp with all this power transmitted to the surface through its rear wheels with the help of 7-seed dual-clutch transmission. Weighing in at 1400 kg, it has around 600 hp for 1 tonne! Its manufacturers state that it takes P1 only 6.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 200 km/h and 16.5 seconds to break 300 km/h barrier!
Had the P1 manufacturers achieved their task? Yes, according to their words, but there is still no video confirmation of that. Meanwhile we can view this beautiful clip:
